A retrospective of the life on tour with Michael Jackson

Michael is the dream of every lighting designer
August 4, 2009 By Bryan Matthews

Michael Jackson was an accomplished artist who knew exactly how to organize a show and put the audience to their feet. Production teams have the experience to know how it really was the life of Michael Jackson. The lighting technician Peter Morse, Jim Waits, Benny Kirkham and Gregg Brooks shared the work with Michael, a unique perspective on the King of Pop

"I was the lighting designer in 'Dangerous'e' HIStory 'tours and' Michael Jackson and Friends", says Peter Morse. "I had worked with Michael's manager a few years ago so when they called me, of course I said yes." "I was excited because, technically speaking, Michael is a dream for a lighting designer. There were no barriers or limitations with it and even when some of their ideas in remotely seemed strange, we'll find a way to perform them. It was the kind of artist with whom you could get as far as you wanted to achieve an effect, not even the Eclipse, even if only serves to support what was being done. He had these weird and wonderful ideas that I did not know how to achieve technically, but conceptually knew what would result. He asked for things in a simple way, but that would require several technological challenges. "I started with Michael in HIStory Tour in the spring of 1996," says Benny Kirkham. "While I was working for Vari-Lite when Jim Waits recommended my services for the show. We use all the classical VARI * LITE lighting for the tour, such as: VL2C, VL4, VL5, Washington and VL6. My job was to put them every day. "When Jim Waits called me the first time I was in the Atlanta Olympics. It was very hot, so when he called me to get me out of there and do a tour with Michael Jackson, I loved it, "said Gregg Brooks. "It was great because it was my first tour. Benny and I worked together with Vari-Lite technicians taking any lighting. '

"Every artist is different," Morse continued. "Some artists are not involved in the lighting of the show and others do not even know your name. Others involve themselves extensively. Some know what they are talking and not others. Michael could not know what he was asking technically, but artistically, in his mind, he knew what he wanted. Sometimes, he said, 'I can have enough white light here?' Or I can have a white light in my head? "And of course we did everything possible to make that happen. I got to the point of being able to guess what he wanted because he knew what he was thinking on the issue of lighting. The beauty of our relationship was that I could reach the depths of my imagination and I knew I was not going too far. Nothing was too weird for him. '

"Michael was unlike any other I've worked with," says Waits. "It was totally immersed, but not necessarily from the beginning. They expect everyone to be seated and then made the changes, or asked to add something. And asked quickly. On the first day of rehearsals, asked me to schedule as many light effects as I could, and actually did some 140 before Michael was ready to see what we had. After seeing all of them and after a brief conversation, the lighting designer Michael informed me that wanted to use them all in every song. Then we learn that maybe we should teach him just a little at a time. '

"Everyone wants to know how he really is," said Kirkham. "I met him a few times and was very professional and I found him very intelligent. At the end of the HIStory tour posed for pictures with the entire team, no photo of the whole group, but individual photos. Gregg and I have this picture hanging on the wall with Michael and everybody asks the same thing: '.? It's real "And that's exactly what Michael was, was authentic"
A national tour is a long and difficult journey. An international tour is even longer and more intense. If you add to that the fact that you are traveling with one of the most popular musical artists in the world, can have an idea. Life on tour with Michael Jackson was tough, but also full of great memories.

"Michael has always been very concentrated on the presentation of the show itself," says Morse. "That means technically and musically in all other aspects of performance. But there was always a specific part of the concert dedicated to his desire to heal the world in a way that he or his music could do it. A Dangerous tour was really his first statement focused on "heal the World" and "heal the Kids." he was always understood and was actually a part of the show. noticed that people's reaction was always the same wherever he went. many places, not fans could speak a word of English, but they knew the lyrics to all the songs. You can always hear them singing in chorus. was phenomenal. televised concert in Dangerous in Bucharest, Romania, the huge immensity of the audience was evident. done touring with artists like Madonna, who had 100,000 to 200,000 people in a stadium, it was the largest crowd I've ever seen. Surrounded throughout the stadium and someone said it was the largest crowd since the revolution. We were a little nervous about the presence of the army, but the nervousness disappeared when people started singing along. I do not know how they saw it in person, but Michael was definitely a kind of Pied Piper or a messiah before his eyes. defended he love to the whole world and I think they quickly realized that. "

"When I went to Japan for the first time with Genesis and walked with pagodas and temples banda visiting, taking pictures, it was like a family outing." Waits said. "But if you were there with Michael Jackson and you also wore a jacket with the logo of the tour, you literally crushed. Could you be a stranger, but if you are associated with 'this' tour, you are somebody.'s A little disturbing from my point of view. for some other people like me, like me, trying to escape. I took a lot of shirts smooth to use in public. ""In 1988, one year before the fall of the Berlin Wall, we act in the Reichstag, the parliament of age," continues Waits. Concerts were performed in the space that was ahead and could give the wall with a stone from where we were. We put extra lights and sound that people could see and hear the other side. We told the public in the streets all was 10 times greater than it had in the front, which was fully booked. It was one of the most memorable moments that I was part and be with Michael Jackson makes it even more memorable. '

Kirkham added: "In our tour, Michael was definitely an international ambassador of peace. We had a few moments on the concerts were awesome. We had a scene in a big city bombarded with smoke coming out of the destroyed buildings. Residents had mixed with the dancers and then singing Earth Song. was the refrain "what about us', 'what about us' and at the end of the song a blinding light and a tank out of the back of the stage. was a truly unique tank and Michael stood in front him as if he were in Tiananmen Square. the driver jumped out of the tank pointing a gun at Michael. he reached out and lowered the gun leaving the soldier overcome by emotion and then putting a soldier approached the girl and gave her a flower. After leaving the flags of all countries of the world by sounding "Pictures at an Exhibition", with huge drums while dancers and performers waved those huge flags of all the countries for which we were doing the tour. was extraordinary. You can not underestimate the popularity that Michael was and is, and no matter where we went to the countries of Eastern Europe, where only a few years before had tanks in the streets. people were excited throughout the world and this is one of the memories that will stay with me forever. "

"A lot of memories of touring with Michael," says Brooks. "One of the most important is that we did many shows in the rain. I remember one night in miserable tour of Asia while We carried the material and small Asian women gave us a hand. They made a great effort to push through the wet ramp VL2C the huge boxes while it rained heavily. It was a kind of warning that we were not in Kansas, but worked as hard as any other member of the team that we had on tour and never forget. "I am proud to have worked for a person who you can tell he was a consummate professional every day," says Kirkham. "Michael Jackson was working as hard as anyone on tour. People see the simplification of his life in the media, but I know it was a good boss and I know it was an amazing artist. After my personal experience, I could see hundreds of concerts, I can prove what I say. '
I really enjoyed working with Michael Jackson on tour, but never qualified as a fan and never bought any of his albums, but when I heard of his death something inside me made me feel like I lost someone close, "confirmed Brooks . "I can not explain, but I was surprisingly changed"
"The memory that I will always Michael is the first meeting we had to discuss ideas about the Dangerous Tour," says Morse. "I met Michael in the most loving and fun person I've ever met, nothing to do with the public image that others saw. He told great stories full of jokes about his past and was extremely simple. My first connection with him, I said that was accessible and definitely had a good vision for the big things, not only his career but also for their shows. It was a creative person so it was a dream come true for a lighting designer.

Morse continues: "One day in the trial, Michael was ready to practice the opening number and catapulted out of what we call" toaster ", flying a hole and landing on both feet. Iconic She wore that dress with metallic glasses sun and long hair, with a hard look and distant. the first day I did this with about 50 people on the team and watching dancers and just stood there for about four minutes. We looked at each other nervously wondering what he was doing . then slowly raised his hand, took the glasses and took them. it seemed to last an eternity, and then quickly turned around and started the music. course I wondered why he did this long pause. Well, reason is that he knew exactly how long it takes to maintain this pose to the public. the first time he did live in Munich Stadium, their pause was exactly the same length as in the tests and the crowd went wild. he knew that. "

"Leading the lighting for a concert of Michael every night with the crowd we had and where we were was very impressive," says Kirkham. "A visit always ends up being routine, anyway. Eventually, it may become normal, but it was extraordinary for the crowd that size. I think in Warsaw had 400,000 people at the concert.'s Role is a number Simple, but until you see 400,000 people in a place that you can not really realize the enormity of what that is. "" On tour with Michael definitely were working with a top team, "Kirkham still counts. "I remember there was another pair of walks that year, but I felt we were working with some of the best professionals in the business. And you always knew you could trust the colleagues around him. Everybody was doing their best. Was extraordinary. Was very hard work and there were days I hated life. dated for seven consecutive months, and traveled around the world. We were unlucky at times, but in the end we all look at each other and realize that I had done something really big . "" While we were on tour I remember thinking it was like when you look back with the Beatles, "says Brooks. "Whenever I see reports of thousands of screaming fans when they first came to America and touring with Michael was very similar. They also were two different tours with the same title. During the first part we fly east to the first concert in Prague and dropped several months later in Los Angeles to go West. literally flew around the world and we all continents except Antarctica. This part of the tour was very tortuous.'s work was sometimes painful but then let's take a little break, producing some things cleared a bit and the second part was a normal ride through Europe. became important at the moment. real tight We had a group that was on board every night and made it possible. "" When I look back at the life and career of Michael Jackson, one of the things that stands out to me is that with all the sensitivity that he had and natural elegance for the "envelope" of technology, could never enjoy a stroll Fully equipped with automatic lighting, "said Morse. "I heard how great the tour was planned to be, but unfortunately did not happen. Michael was more than a singer / songwriter, was an artist, the ideal artist. If you've never sat in a state with 400,000 fans screaming all waiting to see what to do next, you can not realize the magnitude and depth of your life and the millions of people who inspired greatness. " Waits agrees, "it's hard." Every time I think about life and the history of Michael Jackson's greatest people I worked with. And more than anything, Michael was really there for everyone. My last major tour with Michael was the last for me and a good way to end, because I knew that after working with Michael and great staff we met, it would make better. It was a good time to finish this part of my career. "" I think it will be well remembered and the controversy surrounding his life will decrease, "says Brooks." Ultimately, it will be remembered only for what he did best, which was acting and singing her music as only he could do it. "-Gregg Brooks." It's hard to say what position in the hierarchy of musical artists Michael will be located, "concludes Kirkham." People thought nobody could beat Elvis and the Beatles arrived. So people thought no one would surpass the Beatles. Then came Michael.

Simply Michael

I can not believe this guy woke me for a photo

Why is the hair that looks like Michael who just woke up?

Marlo Henderson worked on albums Off the Wall and HIStory Michael Jackson (and some of the Jackson 5).

Marlo needed a photo to your resume to the studio and asked for permission. Then he went to the studio where he was recording Thriller and discovered that Michael was asleep because he'd been working all night.
Shook him to ask to take a picture together and he agreed.
Michael was friendly, but said: ... What??! I did not want to get up! but in the end he did, came out, took some pictures and went back to sleep.
Michael looked at Marlo between shots, saying: "I can not believe this guy was getting up for a photo."
But this aspect and posed with this hair recently raised.
He was very kind to do this, remembered Marlo.
Marlo lived near and knew Michael since 1971. They used to meet at a local car wash in Encino, where Michael was there every week, and there the young chatted for a few hours in a bakery while the cars were washed.
Marlo remembers Michael as he was unassuming, serious but playful, curious and always wanting to break barriers. He likes this picture because it is very natural.
I forgot to say that Marlo Henderson, guitarist and here you can hear a radio interview in which he tells this anecdote (approximately 6.55 minutes).
